Castle Lodge was built in the 1890s
and was believed to be the home of a wealthy business man. It stands in
its own large grounds and is within Horleys conservation area. The
building is full of character and it is easy to imagine back to the
Victorian times with the ladies in their finery and men looking dapper,
drawing up in their horse drawn carriages outside the front door with all
the pomp and splendour that went with it.
Amongst the photographs Castle Lodge doorsteps from many years agowe
have found are two that clearly date from that era. One shows the
Castle Lodge front door steps from way back with, perhaps,
the nanny to the owners young child and of course the family dog. Today's Castle Lodge today
photograph of the same door step shows very little change. Another Castle Lodge from many, many years ago shows a view taken from the Massetts Road. The white gates have long gone to be replaced with much more imposing steel ones.
Castle Lodge has
been running as a guest house for many years and has changed hands a few
times during this period. When Castle Lodge was put on the market in
the 1990s it attracted a lot of interest, one couple in particular, and
who were on the verge of buying the property, was Mr & Mrs Hagerty.
Unfortunately they were gazumped at the eleventh hour, however, soon
after another guest house came up for sale which resulted in Mr & Mrs Hagerty successfully purchasing the Gatwick Belmont Hotel which they
still run today.
Paul has been
running a car hire business in Horley for over 20 years and has worked
closely with many of the guest house owners, such as The Corner House
Hotel, The Gatwick Belmont Guest House, Gainsborough Lodge, etc.,
building up a good understanding of the guest house business.

The old Horley fire station which
still exists to this day but perhaps thankfully no longer provides fire
cover for Horley town! |

When
Castle Lodge came onto the market in 2006 Paul and Judy became extremely
interested as they felt it would complement the car hire business.
Eventually, after a prolonged period of time they managed to
successfully complete the purchase in August 2007.
Since then, they
have made and continue to make extensive improvements to the building.
This whilst maintaining the character and charm of the property which they are very
conscious of and will continue to do so. Paul and Judy take pride in
Castle Lodge Guest House and the service they offer and thank their guests
for their kind comments and reviews.
We look forward to welcoming you soon.
